Slavic Mythology Part IV: The Myth of the Magic Lily

The atmosphere in Iriy was electric with anticipation as the entire population buzzed with excitement as they busied themselves with wedding preparations. Today, was the most special day to the Slavs as indeed, their beloved king Perun was to get married to the majestic goddess of rain, Dodola. She, the one who milked her heavenly cows in heaven which sent clouds to the Earth to rain.

The air was filled with a sense of joy and love, mirroring the grandeur of the feast that had been meticulously prepared. The tables were adorned with exquisite decorations, and the aroma of delectable dishes wafted through the air, enticing everyone's taste buds. It was a day that seemed to radiate pure happiness, as if the heavens themselves were rejoicing in the union of these two celestial beings.

The feast has began and while all the Gods were happy, there was one who stared on behind a table close to the newly married couple, filled with hate. His name was Veles, the king's brother.

Truth was Veles liked the bride and envy of Perun bittered his heart. He never felt that before and hated it, yet nevertheless, could not get rid of the harboured love for the bride. As she stood beside Perun, her beauty was ethereal, her presence captivating. The love that blossomed between them was evident in their eyes, as they exchanged vows and sealed their union. Little did Dodola and Perun knew that in the midst of the grand celebration, a storm brewed within Veles, threatening to overshadow the joyous occasion.

Her belly full with Perun's unborn child, Dodola went down to Earth for a walk in a dense forest during the feast, but Veles followed her and tricked her into sniffing a lily flower. She lost consciousness and shortly after, gave birth to a son named Yarilo. Veles stole the child and wanted to raise him as his own.

Perun, hearing of this was enraged and wanted to destroy Veles, this is how the battle between Perun and Veles started. For three long days and night this battle between gods lasted until Perun finally defeated Veles and brought him to the high heavens to be judged. This was the day that Veles was banished from the heavens and was sentenced to live in the underworld as the king of Nav.
